An interview with Ramone, a student of The Prince’s Drawing Clubs

Ramone, 16, has been attending The Prince’s Drawings Clubs for three years. After attending Haringey Drawing Club, he progressed to the 15+ Drawing Club. His work was recently exhibited at the The Prince’s Drawing Club Exhibition at Bruce Castle Museum.

What would your life be like if drawing was taken away from you?
If drawing was taken away from me my life would be very boring.  I would have a lot of free time on my hands as I draw all the time!

If you could have a drawing lesson from a famous artist, who would it be and why?
I would want a lesson from Stephen Wiltshire because I admire his detailed drawings of buildings.  I would like his advice on completing wonderful pieces of work.

How is the Drawing Club different to your art classes at school?
At the Drawing Club I learn more techniques, I use different types of media and I am challenged more.

Who has been your best ever art teacher and why?
My best ever art teacher has been Chris Green from Haringey.  He challenged me to take risks.  For example, making me use my left hand.  I’m thankful for his encouragement as now I have learnt to take more risks with my work.

What would you say to a new student on their first time at a Drawing Club?
Prepare yourself for challenges and fun.  You’ll learn a lot of new techniques that will stick in your memory for a very long time.  There will be times when you will be asked to try something, you may not like doing it at the time, however when you’ve finished you will like it.

If we etched a quote from you about drawing into a stone monument, what would it say?

“Great work requires great desire”

What do you hope people will take away from seeing your exhibition at Haringey?
I hope people will enjoy looking at my work and will take away a sense of belief that myself and everyone else at the Drawing Club are the artists of the near future.

What are you doing next?
I’m already a member of the 15+ Drawing Club.  I’ve been going there for a year and a bit.  I’m also currently at my school sixth form studying A Level Art, Graphic Products and ICT.
